 BREAK YOURSELF by Ira Brand

‘The thing I like about Springsteen is that all his songs are about blue-collar, American, working class, men. You know, men who work on the railroads, and in lumberyards. Real men. I’m not really that kind of guy.’

Meet Ollie. He’s a graphic designer. But he wants to be Bruce.

Break Yourself is a piece about the performance of identity and of gender. Performed in male drag, it is about the relationship between power and desire, the complex landscape of male and female sexual desire, and the desire to be something ‘other’. And it’s about Bruce Springsteen.

It is also an experiment in constructing personas and alternative identities. A risky, dishonest, head-first, whole-hearted, and perhaps slightly desperate attempt to try and be something we have never been before.

“A writer and performer of rare precision.”

2015 – 2016 – 2017 – What we are up to

Hello. We have been quiet but busy, as per the newsletter, with a number of different projects.

SOLO LABS – In partnership with Trinity Arts in Bristol, our producer Hannah Sullivan co-ordinated the  June lab  with Kathleen Downie and Katherine Hall (two contemporary dance/performance artists) and it was a super productive and useful work time. The up and coming  Bristol Sept 2015 lab is now also full. More to be posted on this in due course.

CLUB SOLO is proud to present our first performance, Imagine Me to Be There,  by artist Sylvia Rimat, on Oct 21st, 2016 at The Wardrobe Theatre, in Bristol, UK.

SOLO collaborations: We have been in discussion with TETRAD about their new initiatives and invited to participate in their work. We are also applying for funding to work with possible university partners Sussex, Manchester Metropolitan, Glasgow, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and of course Falmouth University to help facilitate growth between the university sector and the performance industry sector. See below.

SOLO funding: We are applying for AHRC Network funding to grow the forum across UK universities, and to expand the website to make it more regularly managed, user friendly and useful for solo artists nationally and internationally. We are also applying for innovation funding, to finance our activities more regularly so we can support solo artists internationally and nationally, over the long term. Watch this space.
